About the I Can Too! Program

The I Can Too! disability awareness program was launched by Easter Seals Newfoundland and Labrador 15 years ago to help educate children and communities about people living with disabilities. Since then, the program has expanded to additional provinces and is now growing into a national initiative.

Presenting to Kindergarten Through Grade 6

Customizing our presentations for different grade levels is essential. What resonates with a group of kindergartners may not be effective for middle school students, and the reverse is also true. By considering their age, attention span, and prior knowledge, we can better engage the audience and ensure a successful presentation.

“The students and staff at our school look forward each year to the interactive, engaging and fun I Can Too! presentation. This program reinforces our school culture of being safe, respectful, and kind and the expectation that people with disabilities can do the same things as everyone else, just in their own way! We are so thankful to have the meaningful I Can Too! program as part of our programming at Holy Trinity Elementary.”

  • Complimentary Presentation

    1

The complimentary presentation runs for about 35 to 40 minutes. We offer this session in both in-person and online formats.

  • Engaging Activities

    2
    • We introduce the topic and Easter Seals
    • We choose and read a suitable book for the age group
    • We lead a discussion on various adaptive equipment using dolls
  • Inclusion Starts with Understanding

    3

We ensure that we address questions and provide ample time for sharing stories. Children tend to be quite open and honest, which means we hear a lot from them!

FAQ

This program is completely free of charge. Our goal is to simply raise awareness about disabilities, helping students understand that anyone can have a disability, whether it’s visible or not.

Our program creates a supportive environment where students with disabilities feel comfortable sharing their experiences.

Individuals with disabilities are often unintentionally overlooked in broader diversity discussions. Our program specifically focuses on fostering understanding and awareness about disabilities, helping students recognize that disability is a natural part of human diversity, whether visible or non-visible.

The program is available in Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan. If you’re in one of the provinces mentioned above, please contact your local chapter to request a presentation.

We’re looking to expand to British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba, if you’re interested bringing this program to your school, please email sboucher@easterseals.ca.

“We put on our first inclusion week here at Sheshatshui Innu School during the 2024 school year. We had several opportunities to raise awareness about disabilities and the importance of inclusion, including the ‘I Can Too!’ disability education program that was done virtually for our students. The response from teachers was overwhelmingly positive! They talked about how engaged students were even though the presentation was done virtually. Education and understanding were the goals that were certainly achieved through the ‘I Can Too!’ program.”
